Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717 - 1797) was an English writer, connoisseur and collector best known for his novel The Castle of Otranto (1764), the first Gothic novel in the English language and one of the first literary horror stories. He was perhaps the most assiduous letter writer of his time and built Strawberry Hill, a neo-Gothic manor house.
