Few works on Islamic art and architecture are as authoritative as Creswell's two volumes on early Muslim architecture, first published in 1932 and 1940. In 1958 Creswell published a shorter version, but since then knowledge of Islamic architecture has made remarkable progress. Allan's book is not a revision but rather an update of Creswell's 1958 Penguin edition.
