After an apprenticeship as a house painter and a first job as a theatre decorator, he undertook several trips to Europe and the Middle East. Like his contemporaries, he was fascinated by picturesque and exotic sites and travelled to France and Spain, where he discovered Moorish architecture. In 1838, he continued his journey to discover the biblical lands. In Egypt, he visited the historical sites of Cairo, Alexandria, Abu Simbel and followed the Nile to Nubia. The following year he travelled to Jerusalem and then Beirut. On his return to London, his drawings met with great success. His collaboration with Louis Haghe enabled him to transcribe his watercolours into lithographs. It took him six years to publish the work that made him famous: The Holy land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia. Published between 1842 and 1849, this collection of nearly 250 lithographs in six volumes is a masterpiece of colour lithography. David Roberts died in London at the age of 69.
