The selection of the one hundred plates was based both on the aesthetic value of the engravings, executed by some of the greatest masters of this craft, and on the historical and scientific interest of the buildings, objects and people represented. Some engravings have been reduced, others enlarged, while several represent details of originals too large to be reproduced in full. In providing captions for Splendour of Egypt, rather than reproducing the originals, the publisher has sought to describe exactly what is shown in the engravings. The names of the monuments, identified in the original incorrectly, incompletely or not at all, have been correctly indicated. The exact reference to the original plate in the description is given.
