John Galsworthy (Kingston Hill, 14 August 1867 - London, 31 January 1933) was a British novelist and playwright. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932. Much of his work contains caustic social commentary, particularly on the rigidity of the class system in England. Sensitive to the necessary evolution of the status of women in society, the wife, robbed of her rights and aspirations and forced into an unhappy marriage, is also another of his recurring themes.
