Condition : good, slightly rubbed, stamp on title page, otherwise very good and clean.
Illustrations : one map and 6 black and white plates out of text. The book, published and republished over the years and translated into at least three languages, was originally a simple diary in which Maundrell recorded his observations as he travelled through Syria to Latakia, then along the Syrian and Lebanese coasts and inland to Jerusalem and the Holy Land, before returning to Aleppo, visiting places such as Damascus, Baalbek and Tripoli. Maundrell intended to circulate it among his friends and perhaps gain favour with his clerical superiors. So when Maundrell's diary, full of accurate and factual information, began to circulate among his friends, they quickly realised that this was one of the first factual accounts of Middle Eastern antiquities. Its impact was such that he was persuaded to prepare it for publication.
David Howell, who spent four years in the Middle East with the British Council, has annotated and written the introduction to this new edition of Maundrell's book published by Khayats of Beirut for its Oriental Reprint series.
