Thomas Lovell Beddoes was a curious character whose short life spanned the first half of the 19th century, leading him to be described in some literary circles as the "last Elizabethan" who distinguished himself from other writers of the time by the "quality of his expression". As a poet and playwright, some have called him a great writer. However, opinions are very divided on this particular description.
Obsessed with death, Beddoes struggled with manic depression and alcoholism. In the course of his life, Beddoes was expelled from a university, expelled from Bavaria, forced to leave Zurich and arrested on numerous occasions.
