It analyses the remarkable and enduring influence of ancient Egyptian culture on the West, developing the argument that ancient Egyptian civilisation is central, rather than peripheral, to the evolution of much Western architecture, art, design and religion. The book traces the persistence of Egyptian motifs in design from Greco-Roman antiquity, through the medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical periods, as well as the rise of Egyptology in the nineteenth century, the twentieth-century manifestations of Egyptomania sparked by the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, and the various aspects of Egyptian trends in the Art Deco style and beyond. Most surprisingly, the book argues that Christianity owes as much, and probably more, to the Nile than to the Jordan.
