Born in Cairo in 1940, Leila Ahmed grew up in the midst of a changing Egypt after the end of World War II in September 1945. Growing up in a Muslim household forced Leila Ahmed to confront the intersection of her identity as a Muslim and an Arab woman from an early age. The concept of otherness is a theme she often explores in her writing.
A Study of His Life and Work and of British Ideas of the Middle East in the Nineteenth Century deals with the Arab perspectives surrounding the ideologies and life of Edward Lane, a British-Arab orientalist and translator from an early age.
