The short-lived career of nineteenth-century photographer F. Holland Day (1864 - 1933) forms the basis of this important historical monograph. Day quickly established himself at the forefront of American photography with his portraits and his later mythological series. Day was probably the first great photographer of the male nude. A friend of Oscar Wilde and an early advocate of gay rights, women's rights and racial equality, he was surrounded by scandal and marginalised.
