William John Bankes (1786 - 1855) was an English traveller, collector, antiquarian and member of Parliament. He travelled extensively in the Near East and Egypt, going up the Nile to Abu Simbel. He was a Conservative MP for various periods between 1810 and 1835, but had to leave England after a homosexual scandal. He rebuilt (using Barry) and was the principal collector of the contents of Kingston Lacy, near Corfe Castle (now National Trust). His Egyptian collection, most of his Egyptian notes and lithographic stones for his aborted publication are on display in the house.
